| Back O' The Page Stories 5/02 By Scott CoverdaleI was out of the office on Tuesday, traveling to Pima County's hinterlands. When I got back, there was a series of messages from a woman named Sandra who had a ruptured water line. The first two calls were desperate pleas for help. In the third message, she was in a sobbing panic. In the fourth message, she said that she had gotten a list of other non-profit and city government programs that deal with home repair. She had called every agency on the list, and in each case, she was told to contact CHRPA. Upon returning to the office, I rang her up. I gave her instructions on how to turn off the water at the meter, and on Wednesday morning, Doug and Ryan showed up with a truck full of tools and their reassuring manner. They dug through the sloshing mud, revealed the broken pipe, and repaired the water line. Sandra was much relieved. This job only cost us about $80, but the problem that it solved was immense to the homeowner, who lives on a monthly disability payment of $565, and doesn't know a darn thing about plumbing herself.
