Back O' The Page Stories 4/04
By Scott Coverdale

We got a call from a social worker in Green Valley who had a client in Amado with a propane leak. The propane company had come to refill her tank, and noticed a funny sound coming out of the ground. They told her to get it fixed before they would reconnect it. Nick, a volunteer from last summer, had Spring break, and wanted to use it working with us. Matt took him and a truck full of supplies to Amado. They hunted around for a while, and found the house. The client was in a certain amount of distress, not being able to cook or have hot water or heat. There had been frost earlier in the morning when they got there.

Matt began exploring, and tugged on the steel riser near the propane tank. It came out of the ground, dangling a piece of a PVC fitting. Looked suspicious, it did. It soon became apparent that the line had been run in PVC from the tank to the house with only the risers in steel. Matt and Nick somewhat sadly took their picks and shovels out of the truck, and set to work digging a forty foot trench. Good thing it was a cool day. By the end of it, they had replaced the gas line, installed a new valve, and tested the system. Nick had remembered what it felt like to work all day. Matt remembered what it was like to work with Nick. The client remembered to call the propane company and request a tank refill. It was a day to remember.
