| Back O' The Page Stories, November, 2008 By Scott CoverdaleWe have been doing some work for an elderly woman who is, in the words of Kristi Bowman, "spry and optimistic" in spite of a few obstacles in her life. She was hospitalized recently for a month with life-threatening pneumonia. The local hoodlums took advantage of the opportunity to break into her home, trash it, rob it bare, spray it with gang graffiti, and generally ruin the home that she has lived in for 33 years. When she got out of the hospital, she found that the house had been boarded up by the police, and her water line had broken. We repaired the water line, replaced a sliding glass door, several windows, and did a long list of other plumbing repairs. Our spry and optimistic client kept our workers lubricated with V8 juice and bottled water while they worked, and her nephew came by to lend a hand as well. Her dog, who has obviously watched too much television, went out and dug up a drug cache in the back yard. Those to whom the contraband belonged came back for their goods, and finding it in disarray, stole the dog instead. Our client was able to nicely settle back into her home again. The gangsters have left her alone and her home is her own safe and sound dwelling again. She lives on $895 per month, and without this assistance, she definitely would not have been able to live in her home, or repair it to make it habitable again. This project was completed with funding from the Pima County Community Action Agency and The William L. and Ruth T. Pendleton Memorial Fund.
