| Back O' the Page Stories 1/03 By Scott CoverdaleYesterday, I went to the home of a client whose roof we had just replaced, along with 150 square feet of roof deck and 40 feet of facia. The woman is in acute liver failure, and has three children, ages 3, 7 and 11. When I came into the house, she was laying on the floor. She said that she had been trying to get into her chair for an hour, but had finally given up and prayed that God would send a man to pick her up. Her three year old daughter and 74 year old mother had been unable to raise her. I hoisted her into the chair and sat with her for a while drinking water. She was scheduled for a blood transfusion today, which helps her function for the short-term. She is in line for a transplant, but it may be 6 - 12 months away, and its hope against hope that she can live that long. I told her that we do all sorts of plumbing, but that our Liver Department is chronically understaffed. I held her daughter's hand while she practiced roller skating around the kitchen table. The girl's name is Sara Lee, but she goes by "Cheesecake", and she expects to skate as fast as a car after she practices a little more. I hope she does.
